Acronyms and definitions

In order to read a technical article it is almost mandatory that the reader understand the terminology. If you are still confused, perhaps these will help.

  • anamorphic - an aspect ratio that enhances widescreen viewing
  • aspect ratio - the relationship between the width and height of a picture
  • A/V - audio/visual
  • CRT - cathode-ray tube
  • DLP - digital light processing
  • DMD - digital micromirror device
  • DTVLink - Firewire (same as IEEE-1394)
  • DVD - digital video disk
  • DVI - digital visual interface
  • EDTV - enhanced-definition television
  • flat - aspect ratios with reduced vertical aperature
  • FOLED - flexible OLED
  • HDCP - high-bandwidth digital content protection
  • HDTV - high-definition television
  • IEEE 1394 - FireWire (DTVLink)
  • LCD - liquid-crystal display
  • LCoS - liquid crystal on silicon
  • LED - light emitting diode
  • nit - a measure of luminescence
  • OLED - organic light-emitting diode
  • OVPD - organic vapor phase deposition
  • PIP - picture-in-picture
  • PolyLED - polymer-based organic LED
  • RGB - red, green, blue connector
  • RGB+H/V - RGB plus horizontal/video connector
  • RPTV - rear-projection television
  • SOLED - stacked organic light emitting device
  • sRGB - a new color standard based on HDTV ITU709 and SMPTE-240
  • TOLED - transparent OLED
  • TFT - thin-film transistors
  • XGA - 1,024 x 768 resolution or higher
